Unibroue Recap

Last night The Beer Goddess and I stopped by the World of Beer in Lake Mary (FL).  It was Unibroue Night where they featured 7 different Unibroue beers on draught.  In case your not familiar with Unibroue, it is a brewery located in Quebec, Canada that has been brewing great beers since the early 1990s.  Luckily, their beer is readily available here in Central Florida, albeit mostly in bottled form. So finding that many Unibroues on draught was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Plus you got to keep the Unibroue glass (nice teardrop design with the Unibroue logo on it).

I’m a big fan of all of the Unibroue beers and last night I had 2 of my 3 favorites . Sadly the third, La Fin du Monde,  was not available.

1. Terrible.  An abbey style ale that comes in at 10.5% abv.  Nearly black in color, this stuff goes down so easily.  At 10.5% it may take you down with it .  One of my favorites.

2. Raftman – The name sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon, but the beer is quite tasty.  Unibroue calls the style “Peat-smoked whiskey malt ale” . This one comes in at 5.5% abv so it would make a great session beer. The taste certainly has a hint of smoked whiskey, but it is not overpowering. The Beer Goddess even liked it and she doesn’t like the taste of whiskey.

We also enjoyed Noire de Chambly. A belgian style black ale that comes in at 6.5% abv.  My only problem with this beer was that I drank  it after I had the Terrible.   So it tasted a bit thin. But this is still a damn good beer.

Unibroue Trivia – While Unibroue started and is still brewed in Quebec, it is actually now owned by Sapporo.  At the time  of the acquisition (2006), it was feared by many that the mega brewer would get in there and screw up the beer. But since the acquisition by Sapporo there has not been any noticeable  drop off in product quality.  The Unibroue family of beer still tastes great.
