Beer Review – Samuel Adams Coastal Wheat

This content has been archived. It may no longer be relevant

From the neck label on the bottle:
Hazy and Golden in color, this brew is a fresh twist on the hefeweizen style. Eureka and Lisbon Lemons, from three growing regions in California, balance out the wheat malt character, resulting in a crisp and refreshing wheat ale with subtle lemon flavor.

I must admit that I am a big hefeweizen lover. In fact I credit this style of beer for my beer awakening while on a business trip to Germany 20 years ago. Hefeweizen is typically thought of as a warm weather drink so I was surprised to find this being released by Sam Adams in the colder months.

Tasting Notes: This beer pours a golden amber color, slightly hazy.   First taste is lemon. Almost astringent.  The strong lemon taste does subside  with subsequent tastes.  Very Slight bitterness at the finish, but not hoppy. Tastes “thinner” than some other wheat beers of this style. In my mind this is a middle of the road wheat beer. Not terrible, but nothing special. I had higher expectations for this beer.
